OraBliss Ingredient Spotlight: The Wonders of Zinc

In our previous blog, we discussed the specific benefits of Aloe Vera, one of the all-natural ingredients that contributes to the unique formulation of our OraBliss CBD-infused oral health care products.

As we continue this trend of highlighting the benefits of the natural ingredients that elevate oral care, this blog will focus on yet another important compound found within our toothpaste and mouthwash: Zinc.

What is Zinc?

Zinc, a metal found in the Earth’s crust, is also an indispensable nutrient found throughout our bodies that, among many other things helps our immune system and metabolism function properly.

A few of its notable properties include anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities, healing wounds, and even slowing the progression of eye disease.

On the other hand, Zinc Chloride is a natural mineral (purified Zinc) from the earth. At OraBliss, we use aqueous Zinc Chloride in our products (that have no artificial flavorings or preservatives).

What are the Specific Benefits of Zinc in Dental Care?

Furthermore, Zinc is proven to be effective against many common and prevalent oral health problems such as dental cavities, gingivitis, periodontitis, and malodour.

As we know, this mineral is being used in various oral health care products such as its chloride form in OraBliss pastes and mouthwash. Zinc is used to control the formation of dental plaque and inhibit the formation of dental calculus.

It also shows a huge potential to sustain and maintain its elevated concentrations for long periods of time - particularly in the dental plaque and saliva upon delivery from mouth rinses and toothpastes.

Zinc in OraBliss Mouthwash: Treating Bad Breath

Additionally, one of the best benefits of Zinc in mouthwash is its effect on eliminating Halitosis (bad breath)! Bad Breath is primarily the result of microbial metabolism of amino acids, producing smelly volatile sulfur compounds (VSC’s) such as hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, and dimethyl sulfide.

Zinc is able to diminish bad breath due to its strong affinity for thiol groups present in VSC’s, binding and thus reducing the volatile activity of these compounds. In addition, zinc has been shown to inhibit acid metabolic production that may reduce the growth of plaque bacteria and in turn decrease plaque growth.

Zinc Deficiency and Oral Health

Finally, a study of Zinc Adequacy for Oral Health Maintenance touched on the effects of zinc deficiency in oral health. Although lack of zinc has many factors both bodily and orally, four clinical findings that stand out are:

  1. Zinc deficiency has been associated with poor oral and periodontal health.
  2. A greater reduction in plaque and gingival indices were seen in a study with the mouthwash containing zinc.
  3. Moreover, zinc mouthwash was also effective in the wound healing process and treatment in the mouth.
  4. Lastly, with an increased concentration of zinc in oral healthcare products, bacterial growth is also inhibited by this mineral.

There’s no debate! Toothpaste and mouthwashes containing zinc have been proven to be more effective in preventing dentine demineralization, bacterial growth, and plaque while also promoting remineralization, healing, and better breath.

CBD, Zinc and OraBliss

Just as zinc shows anti-inflammatory properties as well as assisting in immune system and metabolism functions, so does CBD. This duo is beneficial for oral, bodily, and overall health alike.
